Csus2/ B and Am7- Songwriters’ Trick ‘The Walk Down’ Beginner Guitar Lesson 9

Hey Your Guitar Tutor students,

Today you will be learning about two of the chords that are used time and time again in popular songwriting and are not chords from the ‘Ten Chords To Beginner Guitar Mastery’. These two chords are the Csus2/ B and the Am7.

First lets learn the two chords before understanding where to use them.

Csus2/ B

Csus2/ B Chord

  • Place your first finger on the 1st fret B string
  • Place your second finger on the 2nd fret A string
  • Ensure the D, G and high E strings are open so can ring clearly when picked/ strummed.
  • Mute the Low E string with your third finger or alternatively (not shown in picture) with your thumb. Pick each string from the A string to high E string to make sure each note is fretted properly.

Am7

With just one finger difference when compared to the A minor chord that you have learnt in previous lessons, it should come very easily to you. What I want you to do though is not just be able to play it, but to get a feel for the sound of the chord so you can imagine when you would use it in your own songwriting. Understanding the sound will also make it easier for you to hear it in songs when you begin to try working songs out by ear, compare your A minor chord with the A minor 7 chord.

A minor 7 (Am7) Chord

  • Place your first finger on the 1st fret B string
  • Place your second finger finger on the 2nd fret D string
  • Ensure the A, G and high E strings are open so they can ring clearly when picked or strummed.
  • Mute the low E string with your thumb or alternatively (not shown in the picture) your third finger if you find this easier.
  • Pick each note individually from the  A string to high E to make sure each note is fretted properly.
First of all you should understand the sound of both of these chords and notice the similarity when holding the two- just a one finger difference between the two chords. It is this ease of movement that makes this a very popular chord movement and to add to this we usually have a C major chord thrown in there to create the ‘Walk Down’ or ‘Walk Up’ depending which direction you go.

Walk Down

You can see part of a Walk Up used in Ed Sheeran ‘Sofa’ with the addition of the F major chord that you learnt in Beginner Guitar Lesson 8.
Have fun, learn the sound and most of all, make sure you can play the chord cleanly!
Next Lesson you will learn the D/ F# chord so you can play the other popular ‘Walk Down’/ ‘Walk Up’.

Beginner Chord Extras- F major Chord- Beginner Guitar Lesson 8

Hey YGT students,

Todays lesson is a focus on one of the chords that you will find in songs time after time. It is not one of the CAGED chords that we have covered but as you progress through your lessons into the higher level of beginner guitar you will understand how it fits in with the CAGED system.

F major Chord

Simplified F Major Chord- Perfect for Easy Use

Simplified F Major Chord

To play the F major chord follow the steps below:

  • First take your third finger and place it on the 3rd fret A string
  • Now take your fourth finger and place it on the 3rd fret D string
  • Second finger 2nd fret G string
  • First finger 1st fret B string
  • Ensure fingers three, four and two are on their tips to avoid muting the string below each of those fingers.
  • Take the ‘lazy’ approach with your first finger to mute the high E string with the underside of the first finger. If you let the high E ring out it can sound great in some songs and not quite right in others.
  • If you are wishing to do strumming you may want to bring your thumb over the top of the neck so the soft underside of the thumb rests on the low E string, muting it as we are not wishing to play any notes on that string.

Adele ‘Rolling In the Deep’ is a great example of the F major chord in use, you will see it is used in the song along with C major chord, A minor chord, E minor chord and G major chord. These are all chord that we have covered in our Beginner Guitar Lesson series.

You will also see guitar players playing the F major chord as shown below. This is known as the Barre chord technique and is covered in great detail in my eBook ‘Be The Guitarist’ .

Celebrity Student- Yana Gupta

“What was it like teaching guitar to Bollywood star and worldwide model Yana Gupta?”

Hey there Your Guitar Tutor students and followers!

I received this question earlier today and thought I would share my response with you all as it was a great experience and an exciting challenge for Your Guitar Tutor.

Your Guitar Tutor's First Celebrity Student!

Teaching Yana was an absolute pleasure as she was a humble, modest and dedicated student. Being so down to earth made teaching her a relaxed experience, but she sure did learn quick.

An interesting point to note is that when you picture a celebrity and their dedication to hobbies, you may think they never actually end up getting to spend time doing the activity. However, Yana was very surprising and week after week excelled and applied everything she learnt in the lessons.

Worth mentioning is the fact that Yana was in the middle of a career change from her Bollywood stardom to a musical journey. She had written some incredible songs with excellent producers and the product was some seriously catchy music that you couldn’t help but end up singing in your head for hours after.

It seemed Yana’s main challenge was to get good enough on guitar to be able to play the songs from her unreleased album so that she could perform the songs in her own time without the band behind her. I was faced with a very exciting challenge as I now had to take the knowledge she had on guitar and develop it quickly so she could get out their and perform as soon as possible. Yana was a relatively clean canvas to work with so I didn’t have to take time undoing years of misunderstanding or confusion.

When you know you play a direct part in the outcome of a persons performance it is very fun, but when you know this persons career change is being highly awaited by press across the world it becomes a whole different story.

So week after week Yana would tackle learning her own songs on the guitar and was improving at an impressive pace. Combined with learning her own songs she was requesting to learn hit songs from bands such as Coldplay, so it was obvious she was pretty serious about broadening her knowledge on the instrument.

My most interesting experience of teaching Yana was when she had taken the CAGED chords I had taught her in the first few weeks of lessons and recorded herself, added drums and flute and then wrote a song and performed it to me for feedback. This was the perfect example of how a student becomes more than just a student and perhaps this was a reflection on how she had been so successful in her career already.

Yana went on to take her music across the world to India where her fame first rocketed.
